Moses and the Burning Bush

To get in the mood, you should listen to "Moses" by The W's.

Beforehand read Exodus 2:11-4:17. We're mainly going to focus on Chapters 3-4:17, but having the additional reading gives more background as to why Moses didn't think he was good enough to speak for God and to lead the Israelites.

Memory Verse:

  • There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames. It didn't burn up."-- Exodus 3:2 (NLT)
Head on over to THIS SITE for the coloring page.

Crafts:

This website didn't have a pdf or a printable of the tree to use. I found a tree that might work HERE. The link will lead to you a site where they used that tree to make a fingerprint tree for wedding things. You can take this idea and do a fingerprint burning bush by using red, yellow, and orange stamping ink. You could also just glue tissue paper balls or pom poms onto the tree.

Snack:
I thought these were so cute. You can find her instructions HERE. I was thinking this would be a great idea to not only use as props but as snacks as well. Wrap pudding cups in red, yellow, and orange tissue paper. Tie off with Red or Gold ribbon. You could wrap extra pudding cups for a snack in the coming weeks and to serve as a reminder to the kids of what they learned this week.

Story:
Exodus 3-4:17
Option One: This would be a FANTASTIC story to act out. You'll need two people, someone to play Moses and someone to play God. You could have a couple people come in and act it out that aren't normally in your class. You could also read this and have the kids just act it out. Have them put the body language to your voice.
Option Two: This story is full of questions and excuses as to why Moses didn't want to do what God was asking of him. Focus on the "What if" questions (and variations) that Moses poses to God. Use props to highlight them, a bite-sized snack to highlight them, or do some crazy action. The point is to have fun!

Memory Verse Game Ideas:
  • Using a Cookie Sheet to contain the mess, write the memory verse in pudding. This makes for delicious learning!
  • Using a Cookie Sheet to contain the mess, draw a picture of a bush on fire.
  • Act it out.

    • Brainstorm motions with the students to match their memory verse. When children learn movements they are less likely to “lose it” from their memory.
  • Post It Cover Up
    • For this activity write the memory verse on the front board of the classroom. Practice reading it once together and then use post-it notes to cover up one of the words. Then, practice reading the verse again followed by covering up a second word with post-it notes. Continue this pattern until the entire verse is covered and the children are saying the verse from memory. This is an interesting spin on traditional drilling of a verse by repetition. You could also reverse the game beginning with some words covered and have children guess the missing words.
  • Find, Assemble, and Read
    • Put each word from the verse onto separate sheets of paper. Hide them around and have the kids find the words. Once the kids have found the words, congregate at a meeting spot and assemble the sentence and read them.
