Plagues- Week 2

Beforehand read Exodus 9

Memory Verse:
"The wicked die and disappear, but the family of God stands firm." Proverbs 12:7

Craft:
This cow's coloring page can be found HERE.
I thought this would be perfect for the kids to color or finger paint.

Make a special cow hat! The tutorial can be found HERE.
I thought these hats would be perfect to wear during the story and telling about the livestock plague.

Make a fun cow mask. The tutorial and an alternative mask can be found HERE.

Snack:
My thoughts on a snack might be a bit on the "weird side." My first thought was "Cow Pie." So how about a Chocolate Cream pie? Or a Chocolate pie with the whipped cream in the pattern of a cow?

Story:
Share with the kids the plagues mentioned in Exodus 9. Point to each of the plagues on the chart you made for last week's class Plagues-Week 1. Focus on how God was making a distinction between the Israelites and the Egyptians.

Memory Verse Games:

  • Memory Verse Hot Potato. Pass the ball around and everyone says one word from the memory verse but IN ORDER! If someone takes too long to come up with the right word, or says the wrong word. They're "out" until you start a new game. For younger kids, be lenient. The point is to learn the verse. When everyone has the verse down pat, pass the ball faster. It makes for lots of giggles.
  • Memory Verse Balloon Pop. String balloons together, writing one word from the verse on each balloon, in order. Say the verse together a few times. Then, start popping balloons and repeat the verse filling in the missing word from memory. Do this until all the balloons have been popped. This is a FANTASTIC game to play if the kids seem to be bored or not connecting well to the lesson. It wakes them up and pulls them back in.

Plagues- Week 1

Beforehand Read: Exodus 7-8
Make your own 10 Plagues chart to help the kids see and learn the different plagues.

Memory Verse:
"Praise the Lord; Praise God our Savior! For each day he carries us in his arms. Our God is a God who saves! The Sovereign Lord rescues us from death." Psalm 68:19-20

Craft:
Origami Frog- You can find the directions HERE.

Styrofoam Frog- You can find supply lists and directions HERE.

Snack:
Frog Cookies- Directions and Supplies found HERE.

Story:
Exodus 7-8. Summarize these two chapters for the kids. Make sure to mention all the plagues mentioned and point them out on the chart (mentioned above).

Memory Verse Game Ideas:
Print out THIS COLORING PAGE. Have the kids write the Memory verse on the Frog's stomach.

Bricks without Straw

Beforehand Read Exodus 4:18-6:13

Memory Verse:
"Morning, noon, and night, I cry out in distress, and the Lord hears my voice."-- Psalm 55:17

Craft: Popsicle Stick Puppets
Check out this WEBSITE for inspiration. The pictures are SO cute! I decided to take the same idea, but make puppets of Moses, Aaron, and Pharaoh using coloring pages I find online.

Cut out Moses from this coloring page. You can choose to have this image be both Aaron and Moses, just have the kids color him different colors.

Color Pharaoh, Moses, and Aaron and glue them onto Popsicle sticks. Use these while you're sharing the story.

Snack:
Have brownies or rice crispy treats stacked like bricks.

Story:
  • Exodus 4:18-6:13
    • Communicate that even when things get really tough, God knows what he's doing and He has a plan.
    • Start with having Legos available for the kids to play with. It's easy to build something if the legos are right in front of you. Hide Legos all around, in easy and hard places (for a 4 year old). Have them go around, picking up the legos and building. It's not as easy to build fast if you have to go find the pieces. That's the problem that the Hebrews faced.
** Even though things seemed really bad for the Israelites, God still had a plan to rescue them from slavery. Even though it seemed impossible that Pharaoh would ever let them go, nothing was impossible to God!

    Memory Verse Game Ideas
Rainbow Words- Write the memory verse using every color from a Color Pencil box. This would be a total of 12 times.
Disappearing Words- Write the memory verse on a Dry Erase Board. Say the verse together twice. Erase a word or two and say the verse together. Keep erasing words and saying the verse until all the words have disappeared.
Draw a Picture- Ask the kids, "What does this verse mean?" Have them respond by drawing a picture and telling you about it.

    Snack Ideas:
    Milk and Cookies
    Goldfish
S'Mores with frosting instead of Marshmallows.

    Moses and the Burning Bush

To get in the mood, you should listen to "Moses" by The W's.

Beforehand read Exodus 2:11-4:17. We're mainly going to focus on Chapters 3-4:17, but having the additional reading gives more background as to why Moses didn't think he was good enough to speak for God and to lead the Israelites.

    Memory Verse:

    • There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames. It didn't burn up."-- Exodus 3:2 (NLT)
Head on over to THIS SITE for the coloring page.

    Crafts:

This website didn't have a pdf or a printable of the tree to use. I found a tree that might work HERE. The link will lead to you a site where they used that tree to make a fingerprint tree for wedding things. You can take this idea and do a fingerprint burning bush by using red, yellow, and orange stamping ink. You could also just glue tissue paper balls or pom poms onto the tree.

    Snack:
I thought these were so cute. You can find her instructions HERE. I was thinking this would be a great idea to not only use as props but as snacks as well. Wrap pudding cups in red, yellow, and orange tissue paper. Tie off with Red or Gold ribbon. You could wrap extra pudding cups for a snack in the coming weeks and to serve as a reminder to the kids of what they learned this week.

    Story:
    Exodus 3-4:17
Option One: This would be a FANTASTIC story to act out. You'll need two people, someone to play Moses and someone to play God. You could have a couple people come in and act it out that aren't normally in your class. You could also read this and have the kids just act it out. Have them put the body language to your voice.
Option Two: This story is full of questions and excuses as to why Moses didn't want to do what God was asking of him. Focus on the "What if" questions (and variations) that Moses poses to God. Use props to highlight them, a bite-sized snack to highlight them, or do some crazy action. The point is to have fun!

    Memory Verse Game Ideas:
    • Using a Cookie Sheet to contain the mess, write the memory verse in pudding. This makes for delicious learning!
    • Using a Cookie Sheet to contain the mess, draw a picture of a bush on fire.
    • Act it out.

      • Brainstorm motions with the students to match their memory verse. When children learn movements they are less likely to “lose it” from their memory.
    • Post It Cover Up
      • For this activity write the memory verse on the front board of the classroom. Practice reading it once together and then use post-it notes to cover up one of the words. Then, practice reading the verse again followed by covering up a second word with post-it notes. Continue this pattern until the entire verse is covered and the children are saying the verse from memory. This is an interesting spin on traditional drilling of a verse by repetition. You could also reverse the game beginning with some words covered and have children guess the missing words.
    • Find, Assemble, and Read
      • Put each word from the verse onto separate sheets of paper. Hide them around and have the kids find the words. Once the kids have found the words, congregate at a meeting spot and assemble the sentence and read them.

    Special Baby Moses

    Beforehand Read Exodus 1-2:10

    Memory Verse:

    • For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, to do the good things He planned for us long ago. (Ephesians 2:10)
    Crafts:
Option 1- Baby Moses Handprints/Memory Verse
      • Baby Moses PDF Scroll down till you See "Baby Moses Craft." Under the title, it should have a link for a PDF. Print enough of the pdf for each member of the class.
        • Cut out the PDF picture. Have the kids color Baby Moses. Glue Baby Moses onto a blue sheet of construction paper.
        • You'll need construction paper in brown and green for the reeds. Have the kids trace their hands and cut them out of the construction paper. Glue only the wrist part of the hand down
        • Write the Memory verse on the Reeds over Baby Moses.
    Option Two- Moses and Miriam
Go to this Site and print the Templates. Follow the instructions.

    Snack: Moses in the Basket
What you'll need: ice cream bowl, pudding, teddy grahams.
    • Put pudding in the ice cream bowls and put a teddy graham cracker on top of the pudding. The ice cream bowl represents the reeds, the pudding represents bedding, and the teddy represents Moses.
    • HERE is a link for Homemade Pudding if you want to use it.
    Story: Exodus 1-2:10
Retell the story from Memory. Be sure to answer these questions:
    • Was the Pharaoh in Exodus 1 the same as the Pharaoh that Joseph was serving under?
    • Why was the new King afraid of the Israelites?
    • What did Pharaoh do to weaken the Israelites?
    • Pharaoh wanted all the newborn baby boys to be thrown into the Nile River. Moses was a newborn baby boy, what did Moses' mom do instead?
    • When Moses' Mom could no longer hide him, what did she do instead?
    • Who was watching from the river bank to see what would happen to Moses?
    • Who found Moses?
    • Who ended up taking care of Moses until Pharaoh's Daughter adopted him?
It's amazing how God was in the little details. He had a Great Big Plan for Moses' life, and it started before Moses was born. God has a Great Big Plan for our life too, it started before we were born. He chose our parents to be our parents, He chose the time we would live in, Where we would live, He took care of all the little details that would prepare us for the great things in our future. God is a Great God! He is in Control even when things are scary and uncertain!

    Memory Verse Games
    • Pudding Words
      • Smear pudding on cookie sheets. Using their fingers, have the kids write the memory verse in the pudding.
    • Pudding Pictures
      • Smear pudding on cookie sheets. Using their fingers, have the kids draw what they learned from the lesson in the pudding.

    True Forgiveness

Beforehand read Genesis 45:25-46:7 and Genesis 50:14-21

    Memory Verse:

    • "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them." Romans 8:28
    Craft Ideas:
Instead of the hand outline shown in this picture, replace it with a cross. Mold a toilet paper roll into the shape of a heart and let them paint hearts around the cross like it's a tree.

Since we are talking about Joseph truly forgiving his brothers, we can talk about how Jesus forgives us.

    Snacks- Two Options
Unforgiveness- Have a gross snack available (black licorice or any other very unpopular snack).
Forgiveness- Have a snack all kids love (candy, cookies, etc)
Explain that if we choose to not forgive someone, the prize (snack) is not good, not satisfying, and it doesn't make God happy. If we choose forgiveness, the prize (snack) is good, satisfying, and it makes God very happy.

    Story:
    Read/Retell Genesis 45:25-46:7 and Genesis 50:14-21
    • Tell about how God forgives us when we do things that hurt his feelings (lying, taking things that are not ours, etc.)
    • Share an instance where you forgave someone, hot it made you feel, and how forgiveness showed God's love to that person.
    Memory Verse Games:
    • I could not find the original source of this picture, but apparently you can make this using a white crayon and water colors. It would be a fun way to display the memory verse!

• Find, Assemble, and Read
      • Put each word from the verse onto separate sheets of paper. Hide them around and have the kids find the words. Once the kids have found the words, congregate at a meeting spot and assemble the sentence and read them.

    Payback or Forgiveness?

    Beforehand read Genesis 41:54-45:15

    Memory Verse:

    • "He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west." Psalm 103:12
    Craft: Create a Pyramid!
Go to THIS WEBSITE for inspiration!

    Snack- Crackers
    • Preferably shaped as a square or rectangle.
    • Stack them on paper like a pyramid.
    • Gobble them up and enjoy!
    Games: Hide and Seek
    • Hide a cup (painted silver) and have the kids find it.
    • Hide three mugs in tree different bags. (Have all be different colors, but one should be silver. Mix the bags around before the kids' eyes and ask them where the SILVER cup is.
    Story: Genesis 41:54-45:15
    • Retell this story as best as you can
      • Notice how Joseph wasn't out for revenge. It says he remembered the dreams he had long ago.
    • Questions:
      • What do you want to be when you grow up?
      • What if you actually became what you wanted to be when you grew up?
      • What do you think Joseph was feeling when He saw his brothers?
      • What do you think he was feeling and thinking when he saw Benjamin, his little brother?
    Memory Verse Game Ideas:
    • Act it out.
      • Brainstorm motions with the students to match their memory verse. When children learn movements they are less likely to “lose it” from their memory.
    • Post It Cover Up

        • Joseph Running from Sin
        • Joseph in Prison
        • Joseph Before Pharaoh
        • Joseph Made Ruler
          • You an have the kids draw these events or you can find color pages that either are or represent these events.
          • Tape them to the wall in order.
    • Option 2:
      • Create a timeline of the above mentioned events but in a way that kids can decorate. Think 7 Mini Crafts!
    Snack Combined with the Story:
    • Grape Juice
    • A bread (donut or muffin or an actual slice of bread)
    •  S'mores (Made using graham crackers, vanilla frosting and mini chocolate chips).
    Story: Genesis 40-41:
    • Read them these chapters or retell it from memory.
      • Chief Cup Bearer- tell the kids his role in Pharaoh's court. While telling his dream, give the kids a glass of juice to drink.
      • Chief Baker- Tell the kids his role in Pharaoh's court. Give the kids a bread of some sort to eat (donut, muffin, french bread with a delicious topping, etc.)
      • Pharaoh- tell the kids who Pharaoh is. While telling his dream, give the kids a snack fit for a king... S'MORES!

    Far From His Dreams

    Beforehand Read Genesis 39

    Memory Verse:
"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another." 1 Peter 4:10

    Crafts:
    • Option 1- Decorate a bird house.
      • Make sure to share that if there is no way for the bird to get in and out freely, it's a cage-- or a prison.
    • Option 2- Bird Cage Lanterns (picture)

A Snack Fit for a Prisoner:
Snack Idea-- Bread and Butter with water or juice to drink!
    • You can take these ideas and make them a bit tastier. You can do cupcakes with fun frosting or donuts with a glaze.
    Questions:
    1. Have you ever told a lie to get someone in trouble?
    2. Has someone ever told a lie about you to get you in trouble?
This is what happened to Joseph. He was sold as a slave and went to work for a guy named Potiphar. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the King of Egypt. While he worked in Potiphar's home, God's favor was on Joseph so that everything he touched was successful. The Bible says Joseph succeeded in all he did. No matter where we are in life, we should always try our best, we should do our chores as if we are doing it for God himself.

One day, someone told a lie to cover up their own mistake, but they did it with the intention of getting Joseph in BIG trouble. As a result, Joseph was thrown in prison. The Bible says, "But the Lord was with Joseph in the prison and showed him His faithful love. And the Lord made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden. Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison. The warden had no more worries because Joseph took care of everything. The Lord was with him and caused everything he did to succeed." (Genesis 39:21-23).

    Memory Verse Games
    ·         Act it out.
o   Brainstorm motions with the students to match their memory verse. When children learn movements they are less likely to “lose it” from their memory.
    ·         Post It Cover Up
o   For this activity write the memory verse on the front board of the classroom.
    ·         Find, Assemble, and Read
o   Put each word from the verse onto separate sheets of paper. Hide them around and have the kids find the words. Once the kids have found the words, congregate at a meeting spot and assemble the sentence and read them.

    LOVE Crafts

    We LOVE our Families!
This whole post is designed to entertain a lot of our Adventure Club aged students (ages 4-7). We have the great opportunity to have a little Kids' Night Out party with this age group while their parents enjoy a special speaker on the subject of parenting. I'm personally very excited at this opportunity. So far this event spans two evenings. The first will take place in a school and the second in a church.

My thoughts were to come up with some sort of theme. I'm very much against the idea of "babysitting" when we have a real opportunity to learn something as a group. Whether we learn about our families or learn about God's great love for us... there's definitely exciting things to learn if we are "ON PURPOSE" about this event. At first I was thinking of a Family theme, but Family type crafts aren't easy to find. Love on the other hand is an easy topic to find crafts to be inspired by and to do. Thank you Valentine's Day!!

So... The first night that takes place at the school our crafts are:

My thoughts were to take this idea, but instead of being specific to Mom, we say "I Love my Family Because..." Have each answer be specific to a member of their family.

    Tree of Love

How cute is this craft? Since the first thing that came to my mind with the word Family was "Family Tree," I thought this craft would be perfect. You can modify this craft so that the hands become a tree and the hearts become it's leaves.

Why not share the LOVE? Make these cute little crafts for each member of the kids' family.

The second day at the church, my thoughts were to focus a little more on the fact that God loves us and our families:

    Cardboard House
First off, I'm SUPER excited about this craft. You can check out the actual website I found it at, but it has no tutorial. My thoughts were to take different containers, have the kids decorate each piece of the container and then stack them up to be ONE house. The purpose of this craft? Jesus said he was going to PREPARE A PLACE for us. Let's take a few moments to dream up and build a mansion together!

    Valentine's Love Cup
Need a craft to show how amazing it is when God comes and lives in our hearts? How about a craft that shares that joy?
This is a cute little craft to help communicate all of this!

    I love you THIS MUCH!
I could not find the original website this came from, but isn't this so adorable?! When we experience God's great big love for us, we want to share it with other people-- especially those close to us. Why not with this craft?

Need a couple snack ideas to go with each of these nights? Try these two:
    First night: Valentine's Treat Pockets
I feel that this is a perfect holder for fun little snacks. You could fill it with chocolate, trail mix, goldfish, popcorn, or whatever else your little heart desires!

    Second Night: Cookie Cottages
Thank you Martha for this adorable picture and inspiration for a snack idea. How about a cottage made out of graham crackers with some frosting? Give the kids a couple of crackers, some frosting, and some chocolate. Challenge them to build a house, if they can't... at least it taste a bit like smores!

    Game Ideas:

Up first are some game ideas I came up with, using the theme of family or "Working Together." Family to me says "Team." Plus, there's other games in this list that are just for fun!
    • Fruit Basket Upset
      • It's similar to musical chairs. Split the kids into 3 or more teams. Have each team come up with a fruit to be known by. Call out a fruit, two fruits, or just yell "fruit basket upset!" Whatever you call out, that team(s) have to get up out of their chair and move to a chair that is not situated directly to the right or left of them. It becomes fun when you yell out the fruit(s) and then take away one chair. The winner is the kid who is sitting in the last chair.
    • Dodgeball using paper balls
      • Draw a line down the middle of the space and divide the kids into two teams. They get one minute to throw their paper balls and to make sure they don't have any balls on their side. The side with the most paper balls loses.
    • Red Light/Green Light
    • Simon Says
    • Mother May I?
    • Army Dodgeball
      • If you get hit in the arms or legs, you no longer get to use that arm or leg. If you are hit in the chest or head (though we definitely encourage kids not getting hit in the head) is an automatic out for the kid who got hit in those ares. This is a good game to use only two balls or even just a few balls. Any catches, result in those outted kids getting back into the game.
    • Scavenger Hunts
      • Picture scavenger hunts
      • Alphabet Scavenger Hunts
    • Human Tangle
      • First have everyone put their right hand in the middle (You need an even number of kids). They grab the hand of someone who is NOT standing next to them. Do the same with their left hand. Once everyone has a hand to hold, they are not allowed to break that hold. The object of this game is to untangle themselves and to end up in a circle. There's a version of this game called Doctor, Doctor where one person is in charge of figuring out how to untangle everyone. (This would be a good option for a leader or an adult to play the part of the doctor and untangle everyone).
    • Trash Can Tag
      • Have everyone get into a circle and hold the hands of the people on either side of them. Place a trash can (empty) in the middle of everyone. If a player touches the trash can with any part of their body, they are out. The object of the game is to be the last one standing.
      • Please note that if you are playing with older kids (pre teens/teens) this game can get a bit crazy and dangerous. If you find this happening with the Adventure Club age group (4-7) you may want to discontinue the game.

    Other Entertaining Supplies
Playdoh- Check out this site for a homemade Playdoh recipe.
Cloud Dough- 20 Different Cloud Dough Recipes
         * Different scents, flavors and ways to play.

Remember: The goal is to have fun and enjoy yourself when you are with these kids. If you're bored, chances are... so are they. Don't be afraid to take breaks from the crafts to play some games, or even ditch the craft/games altogether. Do what works for the group you have!

    Happy Crafting!

God Knows the Plans He Has for Our Life

    Beforehand Read Genesis 37

    Memory Verse:

“For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you hope and a future.”- Jeremiah 29:11

    Story:

Act out the story with a student playing Joseph and any helpers as the brothers.
    ·         Ask
o   What the real Joseph might have been thinking/feeling?
    ·         Be sure to tell how Joseph had a dream and discuss how far away slavery is from his dream.
o   What do you want to be when you grow up? How far away would slavery be from your dream?
o   Joseph’s dream was to rule/reign over his family, but now he’s a slave, do you think his dream/vision ever happen?

    Craft:

    Option One-
    ·         Paint white shirts. Allow the kids to paint it how they imagine Joseph’s looked. Use this shirt as their “art” shirt for messy projects later on.
    Option Two-
    ·         Pour Baking soda onto a baking sheet. Arrange it to look like a shirt. Combine vinegar and food coloring in Dixie cups or small containers. Using droppers, have the kids decorate the “shirt” with their volcanic mixtures.

    Snack: Cupcakes or Cookies

Decorate cupcakes or cookies before devouring the sugary goodness!

    Memory Verse Games:

    ·         Act it out.
o   Brainstorm motions with the students to match their memory verse. When children learn movements they are less likely to “lose it” from their memory.
    ·         Post It Cover Up
o   For this activity write the memory verse on the front board of the classroom.
    ·         Find, Assemble, and Read
o   Put each word from the verse onto separate sheets of paper. Hide them around and have the kids find the words. Once the kids have found the words, congregate at a meeting spot and assemble the sentence and read them.
    ·         Memory Verse Egg Hunt-
o   Hide each word of the memory verse in an Easter Egg and hide them all around the room. Have the kids find the eggs, and help to put the memory verse in the right order.

These little snacks are made out of Jello and have a fun little plastic fish sitting on top.

    Craft:

You can check out this website to see directions:
This particular dove was made out of a blown egg. I’d suggest blowing the egg beforehand. Another alternative for the egg is a small Styrofoam ball that you can find at craft stores.

    Tell the Story:

You can find the story at Genesis 7-8:19. Focus on the part about the dove trying to find land.
