We Can Make God Sad

Introduction:

Read Genesis 6:5-8
The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. IT BROKE HIS HEART. And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.” BUT NOAH FOUND FAVOR WITH GOD.

The Story about Sin:

Adam and Eve were the first humans ever created. They lived in a beautiful garden that had everything they could have ever wanted. They could eat as much of the fruit as possible. Their “work” consisted of taking care of the garden and all the animals… Adam even named all the animals! When God put Adam and Eve in the garden He told them that they could eat from any tree they wanted, except for ONE! It was called the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Everything started off really good at first. They stayed away from that ONE tree and enjoyed the fruit from all the other trees. Then one day, a snake came around and convinced Eve that the reason that God told them to not eat of that one tree, was because God didn’t want Eve to know everything like God does. This was a lie. God wasn’t holding anything back from Eve, he was trying to protect her. Eve was convinced that the snake was right. So one day she ate from the Tree that God told her not to, and Adam ate with her. Suddenly their eyes were opened and they knew that they had made a terrible mistake!
God found out (because God knows everything) and forgave them. They still had to be punished for what they had done, but Adam and Eve’s sin would forever change their once perfect relationship with God. Since God was afraid that they might eat from a Tree that could make them live forever, he kicked them out of the garden and put angels at the entrance to the garden to protect the tree.
A long ways down the road from this, there were a lot of humans on Earth. (Remember the earth started with two humans, not millions or billions of them). These people sinned all the time and they didn’t care what God thought about it. They made God so sad that he decided that he would wipe humans off the face of the earth. There was one man that God liked though. So God chose this one man named Noah to build a boat, called an Ark.

Games:

·         Memory Game- Matching Animals (Because they would march 2x2 into the ark)

Paper Bag Puppet Craft:

·         Paper Bag
·         Construction Paper
·         Scissors
·         Googley Eyes (Optional)
·         Glue
Tip: To go easy and fast, have the parts of the animals cut out ahead of time.

Memory Verse:

Genesis 6:6- So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.

Memory Verse Game Ideas:

·         Act it out.
o   Brainstorm motions with the students to match their memory verse. When children learn movements they are less likely to “lose it” from their memory.
·         Post It Cover Up
o   For this activity write the memory verse on the front board of the classroom. Practice reading it once together and then use post-it notes to cover up one of the words. Then, practice reading the verse again followed by covering up a second word with post-it notes. Continue this pattern until the entire verse is covered and the children are saying the verse from memory. This is an interesting spin on traditional drilling of a verse by repetition. You could also reverse the game beginning with some words covered and have children guess the missing words.
·         Find, Assemble, and Read
o   Put each word from the verse onto separate sheets of paper. Hide them around and have the kids find the words. Once the kids have found the words, congregate at a meeting spot and assemble the sentence and read them.

Our Decorating Results:
I'm such a huge fan of this ark. I drew the outline on a cheap white flat sheet from Walmart. Then I painted the outline with dark brown fabric paint. I decided to add lines so that the ark looked like it was made out of wood, as well as some color to the planks. I used acrylic paint (because it was what I had on hand) and followed the creases on the sheet to make the wood planks. Then in each wood plank, to get my sort-of-wood affect, I "scribbled" the paint in each plank. Hopefully this image will help my description to make sense.

I LOVED how the ark turned out and my kid LOVED being able to go "inside it." We turned it into a fort and put our craft from this lesson inside the ark (Taped it to the wall).

Yay for creative thinking!!
